How to remove a negative review at the top of Google: the short answer

To remove a negative review at the top of Google for your company name, first check whether it breaks the platform’s rules and report it, because removal is the fastest fix. Then reply calmly, earn a steady flow of fresh genuine reviews, and build stronger pages for your name, especially press coverage on respected publications, so Google has better results to show above it.

  • Identify the result: Google profile, review site page, snippet, thread or article
  • Report rule-breaking reviews on Google, Trustpilot, Glassdoor or Indeed
  • Reply and add fresh genuine reviews to change how it reads
  • Outrank it with your own pages, profiles and press coverage
Bad review at the top of Google for a company name: how to remove it, reply, add fresh reviews and outrank it
The five ways to deal with a bad review that ranks for your company name, fastest first.
Step zero

First, work out exactly what kind of bad review is showing

A bad review at the top of Google can mean five very different things, and each one has a different fix. Search your company name in a private browser window, on a phone and on a laptop, and note exactly what appears on page one.

What you seeHow it looksCan it be removed?Fastest route
Your Google Business Profile reviewsThe star rating and a quoted review in the panel beside your resultsYes, if it breaks Google’s policiesReport it, reply to it, and grow fresh genuine reviews
A Trustpilot, Glassdoor or Indeed profile pageA full results listing with stars under your brand nameThe page stays; single reviews can come down if they break the rulesFlag rule-breaking reviews, then build stronger pages above it
One review quoted in a snippetA line from a single angry review shown under a resultOften, if that review breaks the platform’s rulesFlag the review; the snippet changes when it goes
A forum or Reddit thread about a bad experienceA discussion titled with your company nameSometimes, if it breaks the site’s rules or the lawReport it, answer it calmly, and outrank it
A blog or news article built around a reviewA third-party article quoting the complaintRarely, unless it is false or unlawfulAsk for a correction, then outrank it with better coverage

Tip: take dated screenshots of page one now. They show you what has moved later, and they are useful evidence if you report a review or a thread.

The part no one explains

Why a bad review at the top of Google can outrank your own website

When someone types your company name, Google tries to show the most useful mix of pages for that search. Review platforms are some of the strongest websites on the internet, and people searching a brand often want to know whether it can be trusted. So Google often shows review pages near the top, sometimes above your own site.

What gives review pages their power

  • Huge, trusted domains with millions of pages
  • Your company name in the page title
  • Fresh content every time someone posts
  • Star ratings that catch the eye and get clicks

What usually makes it worse

  • A thin website with few pages about you
  • No press coverage or news about the business
  • Empty or unclaimed social and directory profiles
  • Very few recent reviews, so one bad one stands out

A study by Go Fish Digital of 500 fast-growing US companies (published in 2020) found Glassdoor on page one for 46% of the brand names checked, and a star rating could appear with as little as one review. The lesson still holds: one review page with stars can dominate how your name looks.

The good news is that a brand search is one of the easiest searches to change, because you can create and strengthen many of the pages that compete for it.

Step 1

Check whether the bad review can be removed in 96 hours

Outranking a bad review at the top of Google takes time. Removal can be much faster, so always check it first. Platforms remove reviews that break their own rules. They do not remove honest reviews simply because they are negative.

Google reviews

On your Business Profile, open your reviews, select Report next to the review and choose the reason. You can also use Google’s Reviews Management Tool to report and track it. Google says evaluation typically takes several days. If it stays up, you get a one-time appeal for up to 10 reviews. See our guide on how long Google takes to remove a fake review.

Trustpilot

If you have claimed your profile, use the free flagging tool in your business account. Trustpilot investigates and removes reviews that breach its guidelines, such as reviews that are not based on a genuine experience, contain personal information or harmful content. Flag only genuine breaches: Trustpilot warns businesses that misuse flagging. Read more about removing Trustpilot reviews.

Glassdoor and Indeed

Employer review sites let you report reviews that break their community rules, for example reviews that name individuals or reveal confidential information. Our pages on Glassdoor review removal and Indeed review removal explain what usually qualifies.

Fake reviews and the law

Since 6 April 2025, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act has banned fake reviews in the UK, and the CMA can fine businesses up to 10% of global turnover. If a competitor is behind a fake review, read what to do when a competitor leaves fake Google reviews and our explainer on the UK fake reviews law.

Reviews that often qualify

Fake reviews, reviews from people who were never customers, spam, conflicts of interest, hate speech, personal details and off-topic rants.

Reviews that usually stay

Honest negative experiences, even harsh ones, written by real customers.

Step 2

Reply publicly so the review reads differently on Google

While a review is being checked, or if it is genuine, a calm public reply changes the story. Many people read the reply before they read the review. On Google, your reply appears right beside the review in your profile.

  1. Reply within a day:a fast reply shows you care and are listening.
  2. Thank them and stay calm:never argue, mock or reveal private customer details.
  3. Correct facts politely:if something is untrue, say so briefly and offer to talk.
  4. Take it offline:give a direct email or phone number so the issue can be fixed privately.
  5. Follow up:if you resolve it, the customer may update their review themselves.

Step 3

Bury one bad review with a steady flow of genuine good ones

If you only have a handful of reviews, one bad one drags your star rating down and gets shown more. Ten new honest reviews from happy customers change the average, move the bad one further down the list and give Google fresher reviews to show.

  • Ask every happy customer, every time, with a short link straight to your review page
  • Ask on the platforms that rank for your name, not just the easiest one
  • Ask soon after a good moment: a delivery, a result, a thank-you email
  • Never write reviews yourself, buy them, or hide incentives: that breaks platform rules and UK law
  • If you are hit by a sudden wave of 1-star reviews, read our guide to stopping review bombing
Step 4

Build pages that deserve to rank above the bad review

Outranking a bad review at the top of Google means giving Google better pages to show for your company name. You need several strong, relevant pages, each clearly about your business. These are the assets that most often take page-one positions for a brand name:

AssetWhy it can outrank a review pageTypical time to rank
Your own homepage and About pageYou control it fullyDays to weeks
Google Business ProfileGoogle shows it for most brand searchesDays
LinkedIn company pageRanks for a very large share of company namesWeeks
Press coverage in named publicationsNews sites carry strong authority with Google and AI toolsWeeks
Crunchbase, Companies House and trusted directoriesTrusted reference sites Google often listsWeeks
YouTube channel and videosVideo results take extra space on page oneWeeks
Facebook, Instagram and X profilesActive, branded social profiles often rankWeeks
Wikipedia (only if you are notable)One of the strongest pages on the webMonths, and only with independent coverage

Timings are general guides, not promises. Strong review pages can take longer to move, and every brand search is different.

  1. Strengthen your own website for your name

Put your company name in your homepage title, write a detailed About page, add team, location and contact pages, and use Organization schema so Google understands who you are. Clear pages can earn sitelinks, which take up more space at the top.

  2. Claim and complete every profile

Complete your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn company page and key directories with the same name, address and description. Empty profiles rarely rank.

  3. Earn press coverage about your business

Articles on respected news and industry sites are among the strongest pages that can rank for your name, and they also shape what AI tools say about you.

  4. Publish video

A YouTube channel with your company name and short videos can win a video block on page one.

  5. Keep posting

Fresh, regular activity on your site and profiles keeps them competitive against a review page that gets new posts.

Step 5

Why press coverage is the strongest way to outrank a bad review

A bad review at the top of Google has authority because the website hosting it is powerful. To outrank it, you need pages on websites that are just as trusted. Respected publications are exactly that. A feature or interview about your business on a well-known news site:

  • Can rank on page one for your company name, often above review pages
  • Gives people searching you a positive, independent story to read first
  • Adds trusted sources that ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews can quote
  • Keeps working for years, because people keep searching your name

Several pieces of coverage on different publications work better than one, because each can take its own place on page one. Our guide to outranking negative search results explains how these assets work together.

Be careful

What not to do when you have a bad review at the top of Google

Posting fake positive reviews

Banned in the UK since April 2025 and against every platform’s rules. It can get your whole profile flagged.

Arguing in public

An angry reply makes the review more interesting and more likely to be shared.

Threatening the reviewer

Legal threats over an honest opinion can backfire and attract press attention.

Searching your name with “scam” or “reviews”

Repeatedly searching and clicking the bad result does not help and can feed related searches.

Spammy sites and fake profiles

Thin websites made only to outrank other results rarely rank and can harm trust in your brand.

Flagging every negative review

Platforms warn businesses that misuse reporting tools. Report genuine breaches only.

Example scenario

What this looks like in practice: an example

Here is a typical situation, described as an example rather than a real client. A family-run dental clinic searches its own name and sees, in this order: its Google Business Profile with a 3.9 star rating and a quoted 1-star review about a cancelled appointment, a review site page with a handful of reviews, then its own website in third place.

  1. Check the review:the quoted 1-star review was posted by someone who was never a patient, so the clinic reports it as fake engagement and keeps its evidence.
  2. Reply:while Google checks it, the clinic replies politely, explains it has no record of the visit and gives a direct contact.
  3. Ask real patients:reception staff send a review link after every check-up, so fresh genuine reviews start arriving each week.
  4. Strengthen its own pages:the homepage title, About page, team page and Google profile are updated with the same clear details.
  5. Earn coverage:a feature about the clinic’s community work runs in a local publication and an industry title.

Within a few weeks, the fake review is gone, the star rating has risen, and the clinic’s own website and coverage sit above the review site page. Every case is different, but the order of steps stays the same.

FAQ

Bad reviews at the top of Google: frequently asked questions

Why is a bad review the first thing on Google when I search my company name?

Review platforms are very strong websites, they put your company name in their page titles, and people searching a brand often want to check it can be trusted. If your own website and profiles are thin, the review page can outrank them.

Can I get a bad Google review removed?

Yes, if it breaks Google’s policies, for example if it is fake, spam, off-topic or written by someone who was never a customer. Report it from your Business Profile or the Reviews Management Tool. Google does not remove honest reviews just because they are negative.

Can a company take down bad reviews on Google?

A company cannot delete a Google review itself. It can report a review that breaks Google’s policies, such as a fake review, spam, a conflict of interest or offensive content, and Google removes it if it agrees. Honest negative reviews stay up, so the best response is a calm public reply and more fresh genuine reviews.

How do I get Google to take down a fake review?

Open your Google Business Profile, find the review, select Report and choose the reason that fits, such as fake engagement or conflict of interest. You can also report and track it in Google’s Reviews Management Tool. Keep evidence, such as proof the person was never a customer. If Google keeps it up, you can submit a one-time appeal.

How do I remove a 1 star review from Google?

You can only get a 1-star review removed if it breaks Google’s policies, not just because the rating is low. Report it from your Business Profile with the right reason. If it is genuine, reply politely, fix the problem if you can, and invite the customer to update it. Fresh 5-star reviews from real customers also lift your average and move it down the list.

How to deal with a negative review on Google?

Stay calm and reply within a day. Thank the reviewer, apologise for their experience, correct any facts politely and give a direct contact to sort it out privately. Report it only if it breaks Google’s rules. Then keep asking happy customers for reviews so one negative review does not define your business.

Fintech is being called a scam on Reddit and Trustpilot. How do we remove the false claims?

Start by collecting evidence, such as your FCA authorisation or registration, company details and proof that the claims are untrue. On Trustpilot, flag any review that breaks its guidelines, such as fake reviews or ones from people who were never customers. On Reddit, report posts that break Reddit’s rules or the subreddit’s rules to the moderators. Reply once, calmly, with facts. If a claim is false and seriously harms your business, a UK defamation lawyer can request removal.

How long does Google take to review a reported review?

Google says review evaluation typically takes several days. If the review is not removed, you can submit a one-time appeal for up to 10 reviews and you will get the result by email.

How do I get a Trustpilot page off the top of Google?

Flag any reviews that breach Trustpilot’s guidelines, collect fresh genuine reviews, and build stronger pages for your name: your website, LinkedIn page, Google Business Profile, directory profiles and press coverage on respected publications.

Can I hide the star rating that shows beside my company name?

You cannot switch off review stars on Google or other platforms. You can change what they show by removing reviews that break the rules and earning more recent genuine reviews, which lifts the average.

Will replying to a bad review help it rank lower?

Replying does not move it down by itself, but it changes how the review reads to everyone who sees it, and a resolved customer may update their review. It is one of the fastest things you can do.

Does press coverage really outrank bad reviews?

Coverage on respected news and industry sites is one of the strongest kinds of page that can rank for a company name. Several pieces on different publications give Google better results to show above a review page.

Is it illegal to post fake positive reviews to bury a bad one?

Yes. Since 6 April 2025, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act bans fake reviews and concealed incentivised reviews in the UK, and the CMA can fine businesses up to 10% of global turnover.

What if the bad review is fake and from a competitor?

Collect evidence, report the review to the platform as a conflict of interest or fake engagement, reply calmly, and consider legal advice. Fake reviews are banned under UK law.

Can a bad review affect what ChatGPT says about my business?

Yes. AI assistants often draw on review platforms, forums and news when describing a company. Removing rule-breaking reviews and earning trusted coverage gives them better sources.

How long does it take to remove a negative review on Google?

Removing a rule-breaking review can be quick. Outranking a strong review page usually takes weeks to months, depending on how strong that page is and how many good pages you build.

Should I search my company name with the word scam to check results?

Check once in a private window to see what people find, but do not keep searching and clicking the bad result. It does not help and can feed related searches.

Can United Press remove a bad review for me?

We check whether a review breaks the platform’s rules and take on removal where it does: Guaranteed Review Removal in Just 48 Hrs, with a full refund if a review or link we take on is not removed. For honest reviews, we outrank them with genuine press coverage.

Your name deserves a better first impression.

One bad review should not be the first thing every new customer, partner or investor sees. Check what can come down, add the good that is true, and give Google better pages to show.
