How to Remove Your Name from Google’s AI Search Results (2026 Removal Guide)

Search your name and Google’s AI now writes a summary about you, pulling in old posts, your address or a story you would rather forget. Here is exactly what you can remove, how to do it, and what to do when Google says no.

How to remove your name from Google AI search: the short answer

You cannot delete your name from Google’s AI answers directly. Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini build their answers from pages in Google Search, so you remove your name by removing or delisting those pages. The main routes are:

  • Results about you for your phone number, home address and email
  • the three-dot menu next to any result, to request removal of personal information, legal removal or a refresh of outdated content
  • a right to be forgotten request for old, irrelevant or excessive information (UK and EU)
  • asking the website owner to take the content down
  • pushing down what cannot be removed with accurate, positive results

Most people can start all of this in an afternoon. Google’s tools are free, and you do not need a lawyer for most requests.

How it works

Why your name appears in Google’s AI search results

When someone searches your name, Google may show an AI Overview at the top: a short written summary instead of a list of links. AI Mode and Gemini work the same way. They do not invent information about you; they gather it from pages Google has already indexed, such as:

  • social media profiles, old accounts and forum posts
  • people-search and directory sites that list addresses and phone numbers
  • Companies House records, employer pages and press coverage
  • reviews, complaints and comments that mention your name

That is good news. Because the AI answer depends on those pages, every page you remove or delist is one less thing the AI can say about you. Look at the small links beside the AI Overview: they show exactly which pages it used.

What Google will and will not remove about you

Google has clear rules. Checking them first saves weeks of wasted requests.

Google will not usually remove results from government, education or news websites, because it treats them as public interest information. Got a “No” or “Rarely” above? That is where we come in: United Press can remove reviews and links that Google’s own forms will not touch. See how.

Step by step

How to remove your name from Google AI Overviews in 8 steps

  1. See what Google says about you

Open a private (incognito) window and search your full name, then your name with your town, job or company. Screenshot the AI Overview, and try AI Mode and Gemini too. Note every link the AI cites.

  2. List every page that mentions you

Go through the first three pages of results and the AI’s sources. Sort each one into: personal details, out of date, false or harmful, or fair but unwanted. The sort decides the removal route.

  3. Delete what you control

Close or lock old social accounts, delete old posts and blogs, and remove your phone number and address from your own profiles. Ask your employer or past employers to update or remove staff pages.

  4. Set up Google’s “Results about you”

Sign in to your Google account and open Results about you. Add your name, phone number, home address and email. Google then scans for results that show them, lets you request removal in a few clicks, and can alert you when new ones appear.

  5. Use the three-dot menu on each result

Next to any search result, click the three dots, then Remove result. Choose “It shows my personal info”, “I have a legal removal request” or “It’s outdated and I want to request a refresh”. Track every request on your Results about you page.

  6. Make a right to be forgotten request

For results that are old, irrelevant or excessive, use Google’s personal information removal request under UK GDPR. List each web address, explain why it is no longer relevant, and include evidence (dates, outcomes, how your situation has changed).

  7. Ask the website owner to take it down

Email the site with the exact web address and a short, polite reason. Many will remove or anonymise old content. Once it is gone, use Google’s refresh outdated content tool so the old version disappears from search and AI answers sooner.

  8. Report the AI Overview and re-check

Use the three-dot or thumbs-down option on the AI Overview to report personal or wrong information. Then repeat your private search every week until the AI answer stops showing what you removed.

Your rights

The right to be forgotten in the UK: what you need to know

What it covers

Article 17 of UK GDPR gives you the right to ask Google to stop linking your name to pages that are wrong, stale, no longer relevant or far more than anyone needs to know. Google decides each request by weighing your privacy against the public’s interest in the information.

  • Stronger cases: old information, spent convictions, private matters, things you did as a child.
  • Weaker cases: recent news, your public role, fraud or professional misconduct.

What happens next

If Google agrees, the result is removed from searches for your name, so AI answers stop using it. The page itself stays online.

  • If Google refuses, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) or take legal advice.
  • In the first English case, NT1 and NT2 v Google (2018), one businessman won delisting of an old, spent conviction and the other lost.

See our right to be forgotten service.

This is general information, not legal advice.

Special cases

Removing specific things: photos, old posts, news, addresses and company records

Photos of you

Explicit images shared without consent and images of under-18s can be removed by Google. For any other photo, ask the hosting site to delete it, then request a refresh so it leaves Google Images.

Old social media posts

Delete or archive them, or make the account private. Search results and AI answers update once Google recrawls the page.

News articles

Ask the journalist or editor to correct, update or anonymise the story. If it is old or no longer relevant, a right to be forgotten request can delist it from searches for your name.

Your home address and phone number

Use Results about you, and ask people-search and directory sites to delete your listing. Most have an opt-out page.

Companies House records

Filings cannot be deleted, but in some cases you can apply to Companies House to hide your home address on older documents. Use a service address for the future.

Reviews that name you

Fake or abusive reviews can be reported to the platform. Genuine reviews stay, but a calm reply and fresh positive reviews change the picture. See how long Google takes to remove a fake review.

Beyond Google

How to remove your name from other AI search tools

Your name can also appear in ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity. Each has its own route, but all of them read the same web.

AI toolHow to ask for removalWhere it finds you
Google AI Overviews and AI ModeRemove or delist the source pages, then report the answer with the three-dot menuGoogle Search results
GeminiReport the answer, and use Google’s legal and privacy removal formsGoogle Search and Google’s systems

Microsoft CopilotReport the answer; ask Bing to remove the result with its content removal and privacy formsBing
PerplexityReport the answer and contact Perplexity through the privacy request route in its privacy policyIts own crawler and fresh web pages

When Google says no

Cannot remove it? Push it down and give AI a better story

Google’s own forms often refuse fair but unwanted content, such as an old news story or a critical post. You have two options: ask us to remove it (we can remove any review or link, not only those that break the rules), and make it hard to find by filling the first page with accurate, positive results.

Clean up your reviews and links

Fake reviews, complaint threads and Reddit posts often rank for your name and feed AI answers. Get rule-breaking ones removed and reply calmly to the rest.

  • Report fake and abusive reviews to the platform.
  • Ask forums and sites to remove posts that break their rules.
  • Request delisting of outdated pages.

See review removal and Reddit post removal.

Publish news and get listed

A newsworthy press release (a new role, an award, a project) earns articles that rank for your name. Listicles and profiles on trusted sites add more strong results.

  • Send a press release when you have genuine news.
  • Appear in “top” and “best of” lists in your field.
  • Build a personal website and a full LinkedIn profile under your exact name.

See our press release distribution service.

When page one is full of accurate, recent results, AI answers draw on those instead, and the old content stops being the first thing people see.

Timing

How long does it take to remove your name from Google AI results?

RouteTypical time
Results about you requestConfirmation within hours; decisions usually within days
Personal information or legal removalA few days to several weeks
Right to be forgotten requestSeveral weeks, sometimes longer if Google asks for more detail
Website owner removes the pageDays to weeks, then a refresh request to clear Google

Mistakes that keep your name in AI answers

Only reporting the AI Overview

Reports help, but the source pages keep feeding the answer until they are removed or delisted.

Posting angry replies or rebuttals

New posts that mention the problem create more pages for AI to read.

Leaving old accounts open

Forgotten profiles and people-search listings are often the source of addresses and phone numbers.

Choosing a removal service with no refund promise

Ask for a written plan and a full refund if the review or link is not removed. We offer both.

FAQ

Remove your name from Google AI search: FAQs

How do you remove your name from Google AI?

Find the pages Google’s AI is quoting about you (they are linked beside the AI Overview), then remove or delist each one: Results about you for contact details, the three-dot “Remove result” menu for personal or outdated content, and a right to be forgotten request for old information. If Google’s forms refuse, United Press can remove any review or link for you, with a full refund if it is not removed.

How do I remove my name from Google search results?

Search your name in a private window, click the three dots next to each unwanted result and choose “Remove result”. For your phone number, address or email, use Results about you. Ask website owners to delete pages, then request a refresh so Google drops the old version. Anything Google will not remove, we can remove or push down.

How do you remove yourself from an AI Overview?

An AI Overview is a summary of other pages, so take away its sources. Open the links shown in the Overview, get those pages removed or delisted, and report the Overview with its three-dot menu. Once Google recrawls, the summary changes or disappears for your name.

How do I remove AI generated search results from Google?

To stop seeing AI results yourself, choose the “Web” filter under the search box to get plain links. To stop Google’s AI writing about you, remove or delist the pages it draws on and report the AI answer. United Press handles this for you, including reviews and links that Google’s forms will not touch.

How do I get my name off Google AI?

Take away the pages the AI is quoting. Use Results about you for contact details, the three-dot menu next to each result for removal requests, and a right to be forgotten request for old or irrelevant information. Then report the AI Overview so Google reviews it.

Can I remove my name from Google’s AI Overviews directly?

There is no single button to remove your name from AI Overviews. You can report a specific AI Overview, but the lasting fix is to remove or delist the pages it draws on. Once those pages leave Google Search, the AI answer stops using them.

Can I have my name removed from Google search?

You can ask Google to remove specific results that show your personal contact details, sensitive personal data, explicit images or outdated pages. In the UK you can also use the right to be forgotten for old or irrelevant information. Google will not remove your name from every result, especially news and public records.

How do I make my name unsearchable on Google?

You cannot stop people searching your name, but you can control what they find. Remove what Google allows, make old profiles private or delete them, ask sites to take down content, and fill page one with accurate, positive results such as a personal website, LinkedIn and press coverage.

How do I remove my information from AI tools?

Start with the source pages, because AI tools repeat what they find online. Then use each tool’s privacy route: OpenAI’s privacy portal for ChatGPT, Google’s removal forms for AI Overviews and Gemini, and Bing’s forms for Copilot.

How do I remove my name from ChatGPT?

Submit a request through OpenAI’s privacy portal (privacy.openai.com) asking for your personal data to be corrected or removed from ChatGPT’s answers. OpenAI reviews each request and cannot promise removal, so also remove or delist the web pages that mention you.

Can I turn off AI Overviews in Google search?

There is no full off switch for AI Overviews. You can choose the “Web” filter under the search box to see plain links only. That changes what you see, not what other people see about you.

Why does my name appear in Google searches?

Your name appears because pages online mention it: social profiles, company records, news, reviews, forums, people-search sites and your employer’s website. Google indexes those pages, and its AI answers summarise them.

Does removing a result from Google delete it from the internet?

No. Google only removes the result from its search pages. The original page stays online unless the website owner deletes it, which is why asking the site owner is often the first step.

How long does Google take to remove personal information?

Google usually confirms your request by email within a few hours. Decisions can take from a few days to several weeks, depending on the type of request. AI answers update after Google recrawls the pages.

Can I remove a news article about me from Google?

Google rarely removes news articles because of public interest. You can ask the publisher to correct, update or remove your name, and in the UK you can make a right to be forgotten request if the article is old, inaccurate or no longer relevant. See our step-by-step guide on how to get a news article taken down.

What is the right to be forgotten in the UK?

It is your UK GDPR right to ask Google, Bing and other search engines to stop showing certain results for your name when the information is wrong, old or no longer needed. Each request is judged case by case, and a refusal can be taken to the ICO.

Can I remove my photo from Google search?

Yes, if the photo is explicit and shared without consent, shows someone under 18, or exposes personal information. For other photos, ask the site that hosts the image to take it down, then ask Google to update its image results.

Can you remove a review or link that does not break Google’s rules?

Google’s own removal forms only cover content that breaks its policies or the law. United Press goes further: we can remove any review and any link from Google, including genuine negative reviews, old news stories, blog posts, forum threads and directory listings that Google itself would leave up. If a review or link we take on is not removed, you get a full refund.

Can you remove negative reviews from Google, Trustpilot or Glassdoor?

Yes. We remove reviews from Google, Trustpilot, Glassdoor, Indeed and other platforms, not only fake or rule-breaking ones. Tell us which reviews you want removed and we will send a removal plan within 24 hours.

Is it possible to remove my name from Google for free?

Yes. Google’s own tools and removal forms are free to use, and so are right to be forgotten requests. Professional help is useful when the content is on many sites, a publisher refuses, or legal arguments are needed.

Your name is yours. Take back what Google says about it.

An old post, an exposed address or a story from years ago should not be the first thing people read about you. Remove what you can, delist what is out of date, and fill the space with who you are today. The AI answer will follow.
