Why Is My Business Not Showing Up on ChatGPT? 12 Causes and the Fix for Each (2026)

Your customers are asking ChatGPT who to choose, and it keeps naming your competitors. This guide shows you why, in plain English, and how to fix each cause.

The short answer

Your business is usually missing from ChatGPT for one of three reasons: it cannot read your website, it is not sure who you are, or it does not trust you enough yet. The most common causes are:

  • your website blocks ChatGPT’s crawler, or Bing has not indexed it
  • your details are unclear or different from one site to the next
  • mixed reviews or negative links about your business
  • no press coverage or mentions on trusted sites

It is rarely about keywords. Most causes can be checked in a few minutes. Pick what you are seeing below, then go to the matching causes.

How it works

Why ranking on Google is not enough

Google shows a list of pages. ChatGPT writes one answer and names only a few businesses, the ones it has the most evidence for. It reads the web with its own crawler and, reportedly, Bing’s index. It also looks at what other sites, reviewers and journalists say about you.

So the question is not “Do we rank?” but “Can AI read us, understand us and trust us?” Our guide on how to rank in AI search covers the bigger picture.

The causes

The 12 causes, and how to fix each one

We have grouped them into three simple groups. Start with Group A: it is quick to check and fix.

Group A

ChatGPT cannot read your website

01

Your website blocks ChatGPT’s crawler Quick win

ChatGPT search uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to read websites. If your robots.txt, firewall or a security plugin blocks it, your pages cannot appear in ChatGPT’s answers. This happens a lot: since 1 July 2025, Cloudflare blocks AI crawlers by default on new domains, and WordPress has a “Discourage search engines” box that is sometimes left ticked after launch.

OpenAI crawlerWhat it doesBlock it?
OAI-SearchBotFinds pages for ChatGPT search answersNo, or you can disappear
ChatGPT-UserVisits your page when someone in a chat asks for itNo
GPTBotCollects content for training future modelsYour choice: it does not affect search
Quick check

Type your web address followed by /robots.txt. A Disallow: / line under OAI-SearchBot or User-agent: * means you are blocked. On Cloudflare, check the AI crawler settings.

The fix

Allow OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, and ask your developer to let them through the firewall.

02

Bing has not indexed your pages Quick win

Ranking on Google is not enough. ChatGPT search is widely reported to use Bing’s index as well as its own crawler, and many businesses have never checked how they look on Bing.

Quick check

Search site:yourdomain.com on Bing. Missing pages mean ChatGPT has fewer ways to find you.

The fix

Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and switch on IndexNow (Rank Math and most SEO plugins support it).

03

Your text is hidden in images, PDFs or JavaScript Quick win

A page can look perfect to people and still be empty to a crawler. Words inside images, PDFs or content that only loads with JavaScript are often skipped.

Quick check

Press Ctrl+U (Cmd+Option+U on a Mac) on your service page and search for a sentence you can see. No match means crawlers cannot read it.

The fix

Put your key information in normal page text.

04

Your website has no structured data (schema) Quick win

Schema is a small piece of code that labels your business details for machines: your name, address, services and official profiles. Without it, AI has to guess. The most useful types are Organization, LocalBusiness, Service and FAQPage. Schema helps AI understand you; it does not force a recommendation.

Quick check

Test your homepage in Google’s Rich Results Test. “No items detected” means machines are guessing.

The fix

Add schema that matches what is on the page. On WordPress, Rank Math can create most of it.

Group B

ChatGPT is not sure who you are

05

Your website does not say clearly what you do (weak entity signals) Quick win

AI thinks in entities: real businesses, people and services it can verify. “Innovative solutions for modern brands” tells it nothing. “A family law firm in Leeds serving West Yorkshire” tells it exactly who you are. A thin About page with no history, team or address makes it worse.

Quick check

Read the first two lines of your homepage. Could a stranger say what you do, who for and where?

The fix

Write one clear description and use it word for word on your website and every profile. Build a full About page.

06

Your business details do not match across the web Quick win

An old address on one directory, an old name on Companies House, a different phone number on Facebook. Each mismatch makes AI less sure you are one real business. This is common after a rebrand or office move.

Quick check

Search your business name with your old name, address and phone number. Note every place they still appear.

The fix

Make your name, address, phone number and description identical everywhere.

07

Another business has the same or a similar name Takes weeks

If your name is common, AI may mix you up with another company or leave you out to be safe.

Quick check

Ask ChatGPT “Who is [your business name]?” If it describes someone else, you have a name problem.

The fix

Always use your full name with your town or speciality, link your official profiles in your schema, and work towards a Google Knowledge Panel.

08

Your website does not answer customers’ questions Quick win

AI answers questions, so it uses pages that answer them. Pages full of slogans give it nothing to quote.

Quick check

List the ten questions customers ask you most. Can each one be answered from your website?

The fix

Add short, direct answers to your service pages or an FAQ. Answer first, then explain.

Group C

ChatGPT does not trust you enough yet

09

Mixed reviews and negative links are putting AI off Biggest impact

This is one of the most common reasons we see. AI tools read what customers and the web say about you before they recommend you. If your reviews are mixed (a run of one-star reviews, fake complaints, angry posts left unanswered) or the top links for your name are a complaint thread, a Reddit post or an old news story, ChatGPT sees a risk. It will usually recommend a competitor with a cleaner record, and it may repeat the bad story when someone asks about you.

Cleaning your reviews and your links is often the fastest way back into AI answers.

Quick check

Ask ChatGPT “What do customers say about [your business]?” and “Are there any complaints about [your business]?” Then search your name on Google and Bing and read the first two pages.

The fix

Remove fake and rule-breaking reviews, reply calmly to genuine ones and ask happy clients for fresh reviews. Remove or push down negative links: false articles, complaint posts, Reddit threads and old news. United Press does both: review removal and negative link removal.

10

Nobody else writes about you Biggest impact

AI checks other sources before it recommends anyone. Muck Rack’s May 2026 study of more than 25 million links found that 84% of the sources cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini were earned media such as news articles and features. With no press coverage, AI has little reason to name you.

Quick check

Search your business name in Google News. Then ask ChatGPT “What has been written about [your business]?”

The fix

Get featured in the national, business and trade publications your customers read. See the best publications for AI visibility.

11

You are not in the “best of” lists Takes weeks

For “best [service] in [city]” questions, ChatGPT often uses comparison articles, award shortlists and roundups. If competitors are on them and you are not, they get the mention. More in how to get ChatGPT to recommend your business.

Quick check

Ask a “best [service] in [city]” question and open the sources ChatGPT cites.

The fix

Contact those publishers with your awards, results and reviews, and enter respected awards in your sector.

12

You are missing from the directories AI checks Quick win

Directories confirm you exist: Apple Business Connect, Bing Places and your Google Business Profile, plus Yell, Yelp, trade directories such as Checkatrade, and professional registers such as the Law Society or RICS.

Quick check

Search your business name plus your town. Count how many trusted listings appear.

The fix

Fully complete your Google, Bing and Apple listings, then add the five to ten directories that matter in your sector.

Test it yourself

A four-question test to see if ChatGPT can find you

Open a temporary chat (so ChatGPT does not use its memory of you), turn search on, and ask:

  1. Which [service] firms in [city] would you recommend?Do you make the shortlist? If not, see causes 9 to 12.
  2. What is [your business name] and what do they do?Does AI know you? If not, see causes 1 to 7.
  3. What do customers say about [your business]?Is the picture fair? If not, see cause 9.
  4. Has [your business] been featured in the press? Can AI find coverage? If not, see cause 10.

Ask each question three times and ask a friend in another city to try too. Repeat the test once a month.

Two quick wins

Press releases and listicles: two of the fastest ways into ChatGPT’s answers

If you only do two things after fixing the technical causes, do these. Both put your business in the independent sources AI trusts.

Press releases: because it is news

A press release turns something new about your business into a story: a launch, a milestone, a new hire, fresh research or an award. Because it is newsworthy, journalists and news sites pick it up, and every article that follows is an independent source ChatGPT can read and cite.

  • Lead with real news, not a sales pitch.
  • Put your full business name, location and what you do in the first paragraph, so AI connects the story to you.
  • Quote a named spokesperson.
  • Send it to the publications your customers read, not just a newswire.

A release with no real news rarely gets covered. The coverage it earns is what counts. See our press release distribution service and guide on how to write a press release.

Listicles: because AI recommends from them

Listicles are “best of” and “top 10” articles, such as “Best accountants in Leeds” or “Top fintech PR agencies in London”. When someone asks ChatGPT who to choose, these are often the pages it reads and quotes. Being named in several trusted listicles is one of the clearest signals that you belong in the answer.

  • Ask ChatGPT your customers’ question and note which listicles it cites.
  • Contact those authors with evidence: awards, results, reviews and coverage.
  • Aim for lists on respected sites in your sector, not low-quality list farms.
  • Any sponsored list entry must be clearly labelled as sponsored.

The more trusted lists name you, the more likely AI is to name you too.

United Press handles both: we write and distribute newsworthy press releases, and secure guaranteed features in the business and sector publications that run “best of” roundups.

Your business

Which causes to fix first for your type of business

Type of businessFix these first
Local service (solicitor, dentist, plumber)Reviews and links (9), directories (12), consistent details (6)
Online shop or product brandReviews (9), “best of” lists (11), schema (4)
B2B company or agencyPress coverage (10), “best of” lists (11), answers to buyer questions (8)
New or rebranded businessClear description (5), consistent details (6), directories (12)
Founder or personal brandPress coverage (10), negative links (9), name clarity (7)

Tip: write down the exact question you want to appear for and test that first. A specific question such as “PR agency for fintech startups in London” is easier to win than “best PR agency”.

Where AI looks

Which sources does ChatGPT trust?

84%of AI citations came from earned media: articles and features written by others, not ads
27%of cited sources were journalism, from more than 20,000 outlets
No. 1Wikipedia was ChatGPT’s most-cited website

FAQ

Business not showing up on ChatGPT: FAQs

How do I make my business show up on AI?

Open your website to AI crawlers, make sure Bing has indexed it as well as Google, explain clearly what you do, add schema, clean up your reviews and negative links, and earn coverage on trusted sites. These steps work for ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot.

Why is my business not visible to customers?

Usually because you are missing from the places customers look: an incomplete Google Business Profile, pages that are not indexed, few or mixed reviews, or no press coverage. More and more customers now ask AI too, and if it names three competitors they rarely look further.

How do I get listed on ChatGPT?

There is no directory to join. Being “listed” means ChatGPT names you when someone asks for your service. To get there, let its crawler read your site, keep your details consistent, keep your reviews clean and earn mentions on trusted sites.

Does a press release help my business show up on ChatGPT?

Yes, when it contains real news. A newsworthy press release gets picked up by journalists and news sites, and those articles become independent sources ChatGPT can read and cite. Make sure the opening lines say clearly who you are and where you are based.

Why do listicles help ChatGPT recommend my business?

Recommendation questions send ChatGPT to comparison pages and roundups, and it tends to repeat the names those pages agree on. Appearing in several trusted listicles gives it a strong reason to include you.

How do I get my business seen?

Be easy to find everywhere customers search: complete Google and Bing listings, a clear website, steady good reviews and coverage in respected publications. Coverage builds trust with people and gives AI a reason to recommend you.

Why doesn’t ChatGPT know about my business?

Most often there is too little clear information about you online, or your website blocks ChatGPT’s crawler. New businesses, recent rebrands and common names are affected most.

Can bad reviews stop ChatGPT recommending my business?

Yes. AI reads reviews and complaints before it recommends anyone. Mixed reviews or a negative top result make it choose a safer competitor. Removing fake reviews and negative links, and building fresh positive ones, helps fix this.

Can I submit my business to ChatGPT?

No. There is no submission form and no way to buy a place in its normal answers. ChatGPT finds businesses through your website, your listings, your reviews and what trusted sites say about you.

My business ranks on Google. Why is it not on ChatGPT?

Google and ChatGPT work differently. ChatGPT uses its own crawler and is widely reported to use Bing, and it only names businesses it has enough evidence for. A page can rank first on Google and still be left out.

Does blocking GPTBot stop my business appearing in ChatGPT?

No. GPTBot is for training. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot. You can block GPTBot and still appear, as long as OAI-SearchBot is allowed.

How long after fixing things will my business show up on ChatGPT?

Technical fixes can show within days to a few weeks. Reviews and coverage build over weeks and months. What ChatGPT knows without searching only changes when a new model is released.

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor instead of me?

It found more evidence for them: more coverage, better reviews, a place in “best of” lists or clearer pages. Open the sources it cites to see where they are ahead.

Why does ChatGPT show my business on my phone but not my colleague’s?

Answers change with memory, location and settings. Test in a temporary chat with search on to see what a new customer sees.

Does schema markup help my business show up on ChatGPT?

It helps AI read your details correctly, but it does not force a recommendation. Use it together with clear content, clean reviews and coverage.

Which directories should my business be listed in?

Start with Google, Bing and Apple Maps listings, then the trusted directories and professional registers in your sector. Keep your details identical on all of them.

Will an llms.txt file get my business into ChatGPT?

No. Google says it does not need one for AI Overviews, and the file alone will not make AI recommend you.

What if ChatGPT shows wrong or negative information about my business?

Find the page it is quoting. Wrong details can be corrected; fake reviews and false or outdated articles can often be removed. See what ChatGPT says about your business, or ask us to remove them.

Your customers are already asking. Make sure the answer includes you.

You have earned your reputation. Do not let a few bad reviews, an old link or a blocked crawler hide it. Clean up what AI finds, put your story where AI looks, and the next time someone asks, your name has every reason to be in the answer.
