How to Remove a Google Review From a Former Employee (UK)

An angry ex-employee leaves a one-star review on your Google profile. Google’s rules say employees cannot review their own employer there. Here is how to prove it, report it and get it removed.

Google’s conflict of interest policy covers current and former employees.

Can you remove a Google review from a former employee? The short answer

Yes, in most cases. Google’s conflict of interest policy does not allow current or former employees to review their employer on Google Maps. Report the review from your Google Business Profile, choose Conflict of interest, and give Google the facts. If Google says no, use your one appeal with stronger evidence, or ask a specialist to build the case.

How to tell

Signs a review was written by a former employee

  • It talks about pay, rotas, shifts or holiday
  • It names managers or colleagues
  • It appeared soon after someone left or was dismissed
  • It mentions internal processes customers would not know
  • The reviewer name or photo matches a former staff member
  • It arrived with other one-star reviews at the same time
Step by step

How to report a former employee’s Google review

  1. Save the evidence first

Screenshot the review, the reviewer’s profile and the date. Note when the person left. Keep employment records private.

  2. Report it from your Business Profile

Open Reviews, click the three dots on the review, choose Report review and select Conflict of interest.

  3. Track it in the Reviews Management Tool

Google shows the status there. Decisions can take several days.

  4. Appeal once, with stronger evidence

If Google says no, you get one appeal. Explain the employment link clearly and without personal data.

  5. Escalate if it is false and harmful

False statements of fact, such as claims of crime or fraud, can go through Google’s legal removal route. A solicitor can help where needed.

UK points to know

Employment and the law: what UK employers should know

Settlement agreements

If the person signed a settlement agreement, it may include a clause about not making negative comments. Ask your employment solicitor before acting on it.

UK GDPR

Do not share the former employee’s personal or employment details in a public reply. That can create a data protection problem for you.

Defamation

Opinions are allowed. False statements of fact that cause serious harm to your business may be defamatory.

Glassdoor and Indeed

These are the right places for employee reviews. False or abusive reviews there can be challenged too. See remove Glassdoor reviews and remove Indeed reviews.

A calm reply you can use

Reply template

“Thank you for your feedback. We cannot find you in our customer records, and this review appears to relate to employment rather than a visit as a customer. If you would like to discuss it, please contact us directly at [email].”

FAQ

Former employee Google reviews: frequently asked questions

Can a former employee leave a Google review about my business?

They can post one, but Google’s conflict of interest policy does not allow current or former employees to review their own employer on Google Maps. Those reviews can be reported and removed.

Which reason do I choose when I report it?

Choose Conflict of interest. Then give Google the facts: that the reviewer worked for you and when they left. Do not post personal details publicly.

What if the ex-employee was also a customer?

If the review clearly describes a genuine customer visit, Google may keep it. If it talks about pay, managers, shifts or how they were treated at work, it is an employee review and breaks the policy.

Where can former staff review an employer instead?

Employer review sites such as Glassdoor and Indeed are the right place for employee reviews. Those sites have their own rules, and false or abusive reviews there can also be challenged.

Should I reply to an ex-employee’s review?

Keep any reply short, calm and factual, and never share private employment details. Often it is better to report first and reply only if the review stays up.
