Can you remove a genuine bad Google review? The short answer

Often, yes. A review can look genuine and still break Google’s rules: the person was never a customer, worked for you, reviewed the wrong business, named staff abusively, shared private details, used the review as a threat or made false claims. Those can be reported and removed. A fair, honest opinion from a real customer that breaks no rule stays up, and the best answer to it is a calm reply and more genuine reviews.

If it stays up

What to do about a fair bad review

  1. Reply calmly and quickly

Thank them, say what you have changed, and offer to talk offline. Future customers judge the reply as much as the review. See reply templates.

  2. Fix the problem and ask them to update it

You can politely ask the customer to edit their review once it is resolved. Never offer anything in return.

  3. Get more genuine reviews

Ask every happy customer, every week. New reviews push old ones down and lift your average.

  4. Check what shows in Google search

If a review page ranks for your name, see bad review at the top of Google.

Stay legal

What you must never do

Buy or write fake reviews

Illegal in the UK since April 2025 under the DMCC Act. See the new law.

Offer rewards for removing reviews

Against Google’s rules, and can count as review manipulation.

Threaten the reviewer

Can lead to complaints and make the review spread.

Report the same review again and again

Does not help. Build one strong report instead.

FAQ

Genuine bad Google reviews: frequently asked questions

Can you remove a genuine bad Google review?

Often, yes. Many reviews that look genuine still break one of Google’s rules: the person was never a customer, they are a former employee, they reviewed the wrong business, they named staff abusively, shared private details or made false claims. A fair, honest opinion from a real customer that breaks no rule is the one type Google keeps.

Can I ask a customer to change or delete their review?

Yes. You can contact them, fix the problem and politely ask if they would update their review. You must not offer money, discounts or gifts in return.

Will replying to a bad review help?

Yes. A calm, helpful reply shows future customers how you treat people, and AI tools often read replies alongside reviews.

Can I delete a review from my own Google Business Profile?

No. Only the reviewer or Google can remove a review. You can report it, appeal once, or ask the reviewer to edit it.

What if the review is true but very old?

Old reviews move down as you get new, genuine ones. Ask happy customers for reviews regularly, without any reward.

Will United Press tell me if a review cannot be removed?

Yes. Our free check tells you within 24 hours which reviews we can remove. Payment is upfront for those reviews only, and any accepted review still live after 96 hours is refunded in full.
