ChatGPT Is Giving Wrong Information About My Company: How to Fix It (2026)

Wrong address, wrong owner, a complaint that was never true. When ChatGPT gets your company wrong, customers believe it. Here is how to find where the mistake comes from and get it corrected, step by step.

Tell me about Oakline Dental Studio in Leeds.
Oakline Dental Studio is a dental practice based in Bradford, founded by Dr James Hart. Some patients have complained about long waiting times, and the practice no longer accepts new patients.
4 errors: old address, former owner, one fake review, an outdated notice.

How to fix wrong information about your company in ChatGPT: the short answer

You cannot edit ChatGPT’s answers directly. You fix wrong information by finding the source it comes from, correcting that source, and making the right facts so clear and consistent across the web that AI has no reason to repeat the old ones. In practice:

  • check whether the error comes from ChatGPT’s memory or from a web page it found
  • correct the page, listing, review or article behind the mistake
  • make your correct details identical on your website and every profile
  • ask Google and Bing to recrawl the corrected pages
  • report the wrong answer inside ChatGPT, and use your legal rights if the claims are serious

Most mistakes can be traced in under an hour. Fixing them takes from a few days to a few months, depending on the source.

Step zero

First, find out where the mistake comes from

ChatGPT answers in two ways, and the fix depends on which one produced the error. Ask your question twice: once with web search switched on and once with it off (or ask it to “answer from memory without searching”).

Wrong with search on

The mistake comes from a web page ChatGPT found. Look at the sources it lists under the answer: one of them carries the wrong fact.

Good news: fix or replace that page and the answer can change within days to weeks.

Wrong with search off

The mistake is in what the model learned during training, often from older pages.

Harder: this only changes with a new model. Until then, make the correct facts dominant so search-based answers stay right.

If it is wrong both ways, you have both problems. Start with the web sources, because that is where you can make a difference fastest.

Error finder

Find your error, find your fix

These are the mistakes we see most often when businesses ask us why ChatGPT is wrong about them.

Step by step

How to correct ChatGPT’s wrong information about your company in 7 steps

  1. Record the mistake

Screenshot the full answer with the question, date and sources showing. Ask the same question three to five times in a temporary chat, because answers vary. Count how many of those answers carry the mistake. This is your “before” picture.

  2. Find the source

Open every source ChatGPT cites. Then search your business name on Google and Bing, with and without your town, and look for the wrong fact. Check old directories, old press articles, review sites, Reddit and your own old pages.

  3. Fix what you control

Correct your website first: homepage, About page, contact page and footer. Next, work through every outside profile: Companies House, LinkedIn, the Google, Bing and Apple map listings, and each directory that lists you. Delete or redirect old pages that still carry wrong details.

  4. Ask others to fix what you do not control

Email the publisher of any article or listing with a wrong fact, and send evidence. Most publishers will correct a factual error. Fake reviews, false posts and content that breaks a platform’s rules can be reported for removal.

  5. Make the right facts impossible to miss

    • Publish one clear company facts section on your About page: full name, company number, address, founding year, owners, services and awards.
    • Add Organization schema that matches it.
    • State the correct facts plainly. Avoid pages that repeat the false claim in a denial.
    • Get the correct facts into one or two respected publications. AI trusts independent sources more than your own site.
  6. Get the corrected pages recrawled

Request indexing in Google Search Console, submit the pages in Bing Webmaster Tools and use IndexNow. Make sure your robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, or ChatGPT will never see your corrections.

  7. Report the answer and re-test

Press the thumbs-down button on the wrong answer in ChatGPT and explain the error. Report it in the other AI tools too (see the table below). Then re-run your test every week until the correct fact appears in almost every answer.

Put the right facts out there

Use a press release and listicles to replace the wrong facts

Fixing old sources removes the wrong version. These two tools add a strong, correct version that AI trusts more than your own website.

Press release: announce the truth as news

If ChatGPT is wrong because something changed (a new owner, a new name, a new address, a new service), announce the change in a press release. A real change is newsworthy, so publications report it, and their articles become fresh, independent sources that state the correct facts.

  • State the change and the correct details in the first paragraph.
  • Include your full name, company number and location.
  • Do not mention the false claim; just state what is true.
  • Get it covered by the trade and local titles your customers read.

Our press release distribution service writes and places it for you.

Listicles: correct the lists AI reads

“Top 10” and “best of” articles are some of the pages AI reads most when it describes and recommends businesses. If one has your details wrong, AI repeats the mistake; if you are missing, AI may describe you from weaker sources.

  • Ask ChatGPT about your business and your sector, and note which listicles it cites.
  • Ask the author to correct any wrong details, with evidence.
  • Work to be included, with accurate details, in respected lists in your field.
  • Sponsored entries must always be clearly labelled.

Accurate mentions in several trusted lists quickly outweigh one wrong source.

Other AI tools

How to report wrong information in each AI tool

The same wrong fact often appears in several tools at once. Each one has its own way to flag it and its own source of information.

AI toolHow to report a wrong answerWhere it mostly gets its facts
ChatGPTThumbs-down under the answer, then explain what is wrongIts own crawler, Bing’s index (reportedly) and training data
Google AI Overviews and AI ModeThe three-dot menu next to the answerGoogle’s index and Google Business Profiles
GeminiThumbs-down under the answerGoogle Search
Microsoft CopilotThumbs-down under the answerBing
PerplexityThe flag option under the answerIts own crawler, with fresh pages favoured

Reporting alone rarely changes an answer, but it adds weight. The real fix is always the source.

When it is negative

When the wrong information is a bad review, complaint or old story

The most damaging errors are not wrong addresses. They are claims that your business is unreliable, under investigation or full of unhappy customers. ChatGPT repeats them when the first things it finds about you are fake one-star reviews, a mixed rating, an angry forum thread, a Reddit discussion or a news story from years ago.

Clean-up works in two parts:

  • Clean the reviews. Get fake and rule-breaking reviews taken down, answer real complaints once and politely, and ask satisfied clients to share their experience. Our Google review removal service handles the removals.
  • Clean the links. Ask publishers to correct or take down false and out-of-date stories, have rule-breaking posts removed, and publish fresh, accurate coverage that outranks whatever remains. We can help with Reddit threads and Google delisting requests.

Once the bad sources are gone or buried, AI stops finding them, and the answer changes. We cover the wider picture in what ChatGPT says about your business.

Your rights

Your legal options in the UK

Most errors are best fixed at the source. For serious or harmful claims, these routes are worth knowing.

If it is about a person

Founders, directors and sole traders have rights over personal data under UK GDPR, including the right to have inaccurate data corrected and, in some cases, erased.

  • Ask OpenAI to correct or remove it through its privacy portal (privacy.openai.com). OpenAI says it reviews each request and cannot promise removal.
  • If that fails, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

Privacy campaigners have filed formal complaints against OpenAI in Europe over false claims about people, in 2024 and 2025, so this area is moving.

If it is about your company

Data protection rights cover people, not companies. A company’s main legal route is defamation.

  • Under the Defamation Act 2013, a business must show the statement caused, or is likely to cause, serious financial loss.
  • The law on AI-generated statements is untested in the UK. In the first US case, a Georgia court ruled in OpenAI’s favour in May 2025.

Keep dated screenshots, and speak to a defamation solicitor before sending any legal letter.

This is general information, not legal advice.

Timing

How long until ChatGPT stops saying it?

Where the error comes fromTypical time to change, once the source is fixed
A web page ChatGPT finds when it searchesDays to a few weeks, once the page has been recrawled
Google AI Overviews and GeminiA few weeks, after Google recrawls the page
PerplexityOften the quickest, as it favours fresh pages
ChatGPT’s memory (search off)Only when OpenAI releases a newer model
A source you cannot changeWeeks to months, as stronger correct sources outweigh it
In the meantime

What to say when a customer quotes the wrong answer

While you fix the sources, customers may repeat what ChatGPT told them. Keep it short and calm:

“Thanks for checking us out. AI tools sometimes pick up out-of-date information. We are based at [correct address], [correct owner] runs the business, and you can see our latest reviews and details at [your website]. Happy to answer anything else.”

Share the same correct details with your team, so everyone gives the same answer, and note which wrong facts customers mention most. Those are the ones to fix first.

Avoid these

Four mistakes that make it worse

Blocking AI crawlers in frustration

Blocking stops AI reading your corrections and leaves the old, wrong pages as its only source.

Publishing a page that repeats the false claim

“We have never been investigated” puts your name next to “investigated”. State the true facts instead.

Arguing with reviewers in public

Angry replies become part of what AI reads. Reply once, politely, with the facts.

Buying fake positive reviews

It is illegal in the UK under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act and can make the picture much worse.

Prevention

A monthly check to stop it happening again

  • Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity “What is [your business]?” in a temporary chat
  • Ask “Are there any complaints about [your business]?”
  • Look at the first page of Google and Bing results for your name
  • Check your Google, Bing and Apple listings are correct
  • Reply to new reviews and report fake ones
  • Update your About page after any change
  • Announce big changes (new owner, new name, new office) publicly
  • Keep a log of answers so you can spot changes quickly

FAQ

ChatGPT wrong information about your company: FAQs

Can ChatGPT give false information about a company?

Yes. ChatGPT itself warns that it can make mistakes. It may repeat out-of-date pages, mix two businesses together or guess to fill a gap. Most errors about companies come from wrong or old information somewhere on the web.

What should I do when ChatGPT gets my business facts wrong?

You cannot edit ChatGPT’s answers directly. Find the page or listing the wrong fact comes from, fix it, make the correct fact consistent everywhere, ask Google and Bing to recrawl, and report the answer with the thumbs-down button.

Can I contact OpenAI to fix wrong information about my company?

OpenAI does not offer businesses a form for fixing facts. You can report an answer inside ChatGPT. If the wrong information is about a person, such as a founder or sole trader, they can ask for a correction or removal through OpenAI’s privacy portal.

How do I file a complaint against ChatGPT?

Use the thumbs-down button on the answer and explain what is wrong. For personal data, use OpenAI’s privacy portal; if that does not resolve it, an individual in the UK can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

Can I sue ChatGPT for false information about my business?

This area of law is still new. Under the law of England and Wales, a business needs to prove real or likely serious financial harm. The first US case over a ChatGPT error was decided in OpenAI’s favour in 2025. Speak to a defamation solicitor before taking action; fixing the source is usually faster.

Why does ChatGPT give a different answer about my business every time I ask?

Its answers are generated fresh each time and may come from memory or a web search. A wrong fact might appear in some answers and not others, so test each question several times.

Why does ChatGPT say my business is closed?

Usually because a map listing is marked as closed, a company with a similar name has been dissolved, or an old article mentions you moving or stopping a service. Check your Google and Bing listings first.

ChatGPT thinks my business is a different company. What can I do?

Give AI something that tells you apart: your company number, your town, your sector and the same short description on every profile. Link those profiles from your website’s schema so AI can see they all belong to you.

How long does it take to fix wrong information in ChatGPT?

When ChatGPT searches the web, a fixed source can show through within days to a few weeks once it has been recrawled. Facts ChatGPT learned in training only change when a newer model is released.

Will fixing ChatGPT also fix Google’s AI Overviews?

Mostly, yes, because the same wrong sources usually feed both. Google uses its own index, so ask Google Search Console to recrawl corrected pages, and report the AI Overview using the three-dot menu beside it.

Can a press release fix wrong information in ChatGPT?

It helps, especially when the error comes from a change such as a new owner, name or address. A newsworthy release earns articles that state the correct facts, and AI trusts those independent sources. Pair it with correcting the old sources.

Do listicles affect what ChatGPT says about my company?

Yes. AI often reads “best of” and “top 10” articles when it describes or recommends businesses. Ask authors to correct wrong details, and aim to appear with accurate details in trusted lists in your sector.

Does ChatGPT use Google reviews when it describes my company?

It can quote reviews it finds on the web, including on Google, Trustpilot and other platforms, so fake or mixed reviews can shape its answer. See does ChatGPT use Google reviews?

Can wrong AI answers hurt my business?

Yes. Customers, partners, investors and journalists increasingly ask AI about a company before getting in touch. A wrong address, a false complaint or a “closed” label can lose you enquiries without you ever knowing.

What if ChatGPT is saying something wrong about me personally?

You have extra rights over personal data under UK GDPR, including asking for a correction or removal. Use OpenAI’s privacy portal, keep evidence, and see our personal reputation management service if the claims are damaging.

Your reputation took years to build. Do not let one wrong answer undo it.

The truth about your business is already out there: your clients, your results, your history. When AI gets it wrong, it is usually reading the wrong page. Fix the source, make the truth easy to find, and the next answer will tell the story you have earned.
