Orange Coast has published since February 1974 and is the longest-running lifestyle monthly in its region. Emmis owned it from 2007, Hour Media Group from 2017, and it moved to Engine Vision Media in December 2022 as part of the purchase that also took Los Angeles and Pasadena magazines. It is edited from Irvine for an affluent, subscriber-heavy readership across Newport Beach, Laguna, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach and the rest of the county, and it belongs to the City and Regional Magazine Association. The sections run to food and drink, style and home, people and places, events and its county guides. Orange County is not Los Angeles, and pitching it as if it were is the commonest British mistake.
Everything published has to matter inside Orange County. Not California, not the West Coast, not America. A British brand needs a reason that sits within those borders: a shop in Newport Beach, a supplier relationship with a Laguna hotel, a founder who moved to Irvine, a product a local retailer now carries. Without one there is no page for you.
A monthly print magazine closes its pages weeks before an issue reaches subscribers, and themed issues are mapped out considerably earlier than that. A UK brand with a summer story should be having the conversation in late winter. Anything arriving the month before publication is being offered for an issue that has already gone to the printer.
Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Huntington Beach, Anaheim and San Clemente are separate places with different money and different characters. A pitch that names the right one, correctly, reads as informed. One that refers vaguely to the Los Angeles area, or puts Disneyland in LA, does not get a second look from anybody.
Much of the magazine tells a reader where to go and what to do this month. Restaurants, shops, weekends, home projects, professionals worth calling. If your British brand can be the answer to one of those questions locally, as a stockist, a service or a designer working on county homes, you fit. If it can only be admired from afar, you do not.
Regional monthlies run recurring franchises and professional listings, and these usually carry published criteria, nomination windows and deadlines sitting months before the issue. If a list is your target, find out how that particular list gets compiled before pitching into it. Approaching the newsroom about something not editorially selected wastes everyone’s afternoon.
The staff is small and the local business community is tight. Overselling a story, missing an agreed deadline or sending something visibly mass-mailed follows you further here than it ever would at a national title. One accurate, well-targeted approach beats a campaign of near-misses, and a relationship built once tends to keep paying.
The mix will be familiar to anyone who reads regional monthlies, with a heavy bias towards things a reader can do within a short drive. Fit your story to one of these or leave it alone.
Regional editors identify an out-of-area pitch instantly, usually from the opening sentence. These five failures account for most of what gets deleted from British senders before breakfast.
Not sure which of these applies to your story? Send it to ceo@unitedpress.uk and we will tell you straight.
Engine Vision Media, which bought it from Hour Media Group in December 2022 alongside Los Angeles and Pasadena magazines. Hour Media had itself acquired the title from Emmis in 2017. Shared ownership does not mean shared editorial: each magazine is edited separately for its own region, so coverage in one is not a route into another and each needs its own local reason.
It is if you already have distribution or a partner there. The county combines high household incomes with a strong independent retail and dining scene and an affluent subscriber base, which suits premium consumer brands well. What it will not do is cover a British business simply because the demographics look encouraging. Presence comes first, coverage second.
Plan in months rather than weeks. A monthly closes pages well before the on-sale date and builds themed and annual issues earlier still. If you are aiming at a particular season or franchise, assume you should be having the conversation at least a full quarter ahead, and earlier again for anything that requires original photography to be arranged.
Yes. Online coverage can respond to openings, events and news far more quickly than a print schedule allows, and it carries guides and listings that get updated through the year. The standard for local relevance is identical, though. Faster does not mean looser, and a story with no county connection is no more publishable online than on paper.
Orange County sits on Pacific time, eight hours behind the UK all year, so their working morning starts in your late afternoon. Send between roughly four and six in the evening UK time and your email is near the top of the pile when the desk begins. Say clearly when you can take a call, because scheduling one is the awkward part.
We turn your story into Orange Coast Magazine-worthy editorial — amplifying your reach, desirability and impact.
