Media Interviews: The Four Formats, and What Each Is Worth
They get sold interchangeably and they are not remotely the same thing. Here is the honest ranking.
Podcast guesting: the best media interview
A real conversation, usually 30 to 60 minutes, with an audience that chose the show. The most useful format for founders by a distance: long enough to explain something properly, and listeners genuinely trust hosts.
Booked TV segments: paid media interviews
A slot on a station’s lifestyle or morning programming, 3 to 10 minutes. Almost always paid partner space rather than a news booking, and it produces filmed footage you can keep.
Remote and in-person media interviews
Zoom, phone or studio, arranged with a journalist writing a piece. Slowest to earn, no video asset, and the one that carries the most editorial weight because someone chose to speak to you.
The filmed asset
The reason most people buy a TV segment. A professionally shot 3 to 10 minute video with a station’s set behind you, yours to reuse on your site, in decks and in ads.
What we will not call news
A sponsored lifestyle segment is not a news interview. The station pages usually say so in the URL, and if we place you in one we will describe it as what it is.
How to choose your media interview format
Want reach and trust: podcasts. Want footage: a filmed segment. Want editorial standing: earned interviews, which take longest and cannot be bought.
The list, in the open
Media Interview Formats and Where They Run
Every station, show and slot is named on your shortlist before you approve it, along with whether it is a paid partner slot or an earned booking.
Filmed Digital TV Segments
Five slots, 3–10 minutes, recorded over a video call and published on the station’s site. Four of the five are clearly labelled partner or contributor content by the station itself — we tell you which before you agree.
Booked Broadcast Segments
Lifestyle and morning programming across 120 US affiliate markets — ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX stations. Booked space, not news bookings.
Podcast Guesting
UK and international shows across business, technology, finance and lifestyle. Every show named, with its audience and format, before anything is booked.
Podcasts specifically
Podcast Guesting: The Media Interview That Repays the Effort
Of everything on this page, podcast guesting is the one we would spend on first for most founders.
Length is the podcast advantage over other media interviews
Forty minutes lets you explain something properly. No other format gives you that, and complicated businesses badly need it.
Host trust transfers
Listeners chose the show and trust the host. Being introduced by someone they already listen to does more than any advert in the same slot.
Show notes are the SEO
The episode page, its transcript and its notes are indexed text. That is the part search engines and AI assistants can actually read, so ask whether a show publishes them.
Small and specific beats big and general
A show with two thousand listeners who all run agencies is worth more to an agency than a general business show with fifty thousand.
It compounds
Guests get recommended to other hosts. Three good episodes usually generate invitations without further outreach, which is rarely true of any paid format.
Where to start
Our list of the best UK podcasts for founders is the shortlist we work from, and it is public.
How it works
How Media Interviews Are Booked
Six steps. You approve at two of them, and nothing is recorded before you have seen the format.
We work out what your media interviews can cover
The single biggest predictor of a good interview. A founder with one sharp, specific view books better than a company with a general story.
You get the named shortlist
Every station, show or publication, with its format, length, audience and whether the slot is paid or earned. Strike anything you do not want.
We pitch or book
Earned interviews are pitched and can be declined. Paid segments are booked to a date. We are clear at the outset which route each name is on.
Preparation before you record
Likely questions, the two or three things worth landing, and what to avoid. Our media training covers this properly. The BBC Academy also publishes free guidance on being interviewed.
The interview happens
Filmed segments run over a video call and take under an hour including setup. Podcasts run 30 to 60 minutes. Journalist interviews are usually 20 to 30.
You get the link and the footage
The episode or station page, plus the video file where the format includes one, so you can reuse it on your own channels.
Being honest about it
What Media Interviews Cannot Do for You
Five things worth knowing before you spend anything.
A paid media interview is not a news appearance
Station URLs for these slots often contain words like partner or sponsored. Describing one as “featured on FOX” in a pitch deck is the kind of claim that unravels when somebody clicks it.
Media interviews do very little for search
A segment page is one URL on a station site. It will not move your rankings. If search is the goal, editorial articles and news distribution do far more.
And little for AI answers
Assistants read text. Video without a full transcript is largely invisible to them, which is why podcast episodes with published show notes are worth more here than segments without.
Reach is not what you think
A local affiliate lifestyle slot reaches a modest daytime audience. Its value is the footage and the logo, not the live viewership, and anyone quoting you a market-size figure is quoting potential, not viewers.
Earned media interviews cannot be scheduled
A journalist decides. We can pitch well and quickly, but nobody can promise you a date, and an agency that does is selling you a paid slot under another name.
What is genuinely reliable
The filmed asset, the named slot, the date for paid bookings, and an honest label on each one.
The vocabulary
Media Interview Terms, Explained
The words that get used loosely when this is being sold.
Partner or contributor segment
A slot the station was paid to run. Labelled by the station, and the honest name for most digital TV segments sold as “TV features”.
Earned interview
A journalist or host chose to speak to you. Cannot be bought, cannot be scheduled, carries the most weight.
Guesting
Appearing on someone else’s podcast as their guest. Distinct from sponsoring an episode, which is advertising.
B-roll
Supporting footage cut around the interview. Worth supplying if you have it, because segments with it look considerably better.
Transcript
The written version of the episode. The part that is indexed and readable by AI assistants, and the reason a show that publishes one is worth more.
Media training
Preparation for being questioned. Separate from booking, and the difference between a usable interview and a wasted one — see our media training page.
Questions
Media Interviews, TV Segments & Podcasts: Your Questions Answered
Straight answers on what is earned, what is paid, and what each format is actually worth.
What are media interviews?
Media interviews are any format where you answer questions in your own voice rather than through written copy: a podcast episode, a filmed television segment, or a conversation with a journalist over Zoom, phone or in person.
Is a TV segment the same as being on the news?
No, and this is the most common misrepresentation in the industry. Almost every bookable digital TV segment is paid partner or contributor space — the station’s own URL usually says so. We tell you which slots are paid before you agree to anything.
Can you get me on the actual news?
We can pitch you for earned media interviews, and if the story is genuinely newsworthy that sometimes lands. Nobody can promise it or give you a date. An agency offering guaranteed news interviews is selling paid segments under a different name.
What is podcast guesting?
Appearing as a guest on someone else’s show. It is different from sponsoring an episode, which is advertising. Guesting means the host chose to have the conversation with you.
Which media interviews are best for a founder?
Podcast guesting, for most people. Forty minutes lets you explain a complicated business properly, listeners already trust the host, and the episode page with its transcript is indexed text that search engines and AI assistants can read.
Do I get the video from a TV segment?
Yes, on the formats that include one, and it is usually the main reason to buy one. You get a professionally shot three to ten minute video with the station’s set behind you, to reuse on your site, in decks and in ads.
How long do filmed media interviews take?
Under an hour including setup, recorded over a video call. Segments run three to ten minutes depending on the slot, and turnaround from booking to publication is typically one to two weeks.
Do media interviews help my Google rankings?
Very little. A segment is one page on a station’s site and video is not indexed the way articles are. If UK search visibility is your goal, editorial coverage and news distribution do considerably more.
Do media interviews help with AI search?
Only where there is text. Assistants read transcripts and show notes, not video or audio. A podcast that publishes a full transcript is worth far more for AI visibility than a filmed segment with no written version.
How many people actually watch a local TV segment?
Fewer than the market-size figures suggest. Those numbers describe how many households could receive the channel, not how many watched your slot. The value is the footage and the recognition, not live viewership.
Can I say I was featured on FOX or NBC?
Be careful. If the slot was sponsored partner content, describing it as a feature is a claim that falls apart the moment somebody opens the link and sees the label. Say you appeared in a partner segment, which is both accurate and still impressive.
Do you prepare me for media interviews?
Yes — likely questions, the two or three points worth landing, and what to avoid. If you want more than a briefing, our media training page covers proper preparation.
What makes a good media interview guest?
One specific, well-argued view. Guests who arrive with a clear opinion get invited back and recommended to other hosts. Guests who describe their company get politely thanked.
Which shows or stations will I be on?
Every station, show and slot is named on your shortlist before anything is booked, along with its format, length, audience and whether it is paid or earned. You can strike any of them.
Can you book media interviews outside the UK?
Yes. The filmed segments are mostly US stations, and podcast guesting is international. UK-specific broadcast has its own page.
What do I need to supply?
A quiet room, a decent camera and microphone, and a clear view worth hearing. Poor audio ruins more interviews than poor answers do.
Is podcast guesting free?
Genuine guesting is earned rather than bought — the work is in the pitching and the preparation. Paid podcast slots exist and are advertising; we would tell you if a show charged.
How are media interviews reported?
Each media interview is listed with its format, date, link and whether it was earned or a paid partner slot. Paid segments are never counted alongside earned interviews.
Should I do this instead of press coverage?
Alongside. Media interviews build familiarity and give you assets; written coverage builds the searchable, citable record. They do different jobs.
