UK travel media divides in two. The trade press — TTG, Travel Weekly, Travel Gossip — is read by agents and operators and wants commercial news. The consumer press — Condé Nast Traveller, National Geographic Traveller (UK), Wanderlust and the newspaper travel sections — is read by travellers and wants stories. A pitch built for one will not work in the other.
Commerce. A new commission structure, a contract win, a route launch, appointments, trading results, distribution agreements. It reads like business journalism because that is what it is. TTG has been digital-first since closing its print magazine in November 2025, after 72 years, alongside events and paid research — and it has been explicit about moving away from republishing press releases toward its own content. Material that reads like a release now travels worse there than it did two years ago. Travel Weekly, owned by Jacobs Media Group since 2009, still publishes a weekly print edition read by more than 45,000, with Aspire covering luxury and Travolution covering travel technology.
Experience. A destination told through someone who went there, pegged to a season, a new route or an opening. Service formats — where to go, what to book, what it takes to do properly. National Geographic Traveller (UK) is published under licence by APL Media rather than by National Geographic directly, which is worth knowing before you pitch it.
Trade: travel agents, tour operators, airline and hotel commercial teams — the people who sell travel. Reaching them changes what gets sold. Consumer: people deciding where to spend a holiday. Reaching them changes what gets booked. Most travel brands need both, and need them pitched differently.
For trade, lead with the commercial fact. What changes for an agent? What is the margin, the route, the contract, the training? Adjectives do not survive here. For consumer, lead with the experience and the peg — a place is not a story, but a place at a particular moment, with a reason to go now, is.
The trade press works to a commercial news cycle and rewards being first with something concrete. The consumer press works to a long lead: seasonal features are commissioned months ahead, so plan against the season you want to appear in, not the season you are in.
Trade coverage suits operators, hotels, airlines and anyone who sells through agents. Consumer coverage suits destinations, properties and experiences a reader can book. It suits you less if you have neither a commercial development nor a bookable experience — “we are a lovely hotel” is not a story in either half of this market. We will tell you which half fits you, and which titles, before you commit to anything.
