Wisconsin Newsroom Notes

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: an investigative newsroom in a swing state, and what that means for a UK pitch

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel was created on 2 April 1995 when Journal Communications merged two rivals: the Milwaukee Sentinel, founded in 1837, and the Milwaukee Journal, founded in 1882. Gannett bought Journal Media Group in 2016, ending long local ownership, and the paper now anchors the USA TODAY Network’s Wisconsin operation, printing several state titles at its Milwaukee plant. It has won five Pulitzer prizes, including local reporting in 2008 and explanatory reporting in 2010 for a long-form medical genetics project. That last prize tells you something practical: this newsroom will invest weeks in a genuinely technical story, which very few regional papers still will.

01

Milwaukee is not Chicago

The two cities sit about ninety miles apart and share almost nothing editorially. Chicago coverage does not reach Wisconsin readers, and a Chicago-based US launch is not a Milwaukee story. If your operation is in Wisconsin, say which county and which municipality. If it is in Illinois, this is the wrong newspaper and the desk will say so quickly.

02

Water technology is the specialist hook

Milwaukee has built a distinctive cluster around water: treatment, metering, filtration, pumps and freshwater research, supported by a dedicated industry body and a university school devoted to the subject. Very few British companies think of it. If you work in water infrastructure, monitoring or wastewater technology, this is one of the few American cities where that expertise is understood without explanation.

03

Industrial automation runs deep

Southeastern Wisconsin is a heavy manufacturing and controls region, home to industrial automation, power tools, building systems and medical imaging manufacturers. Reporters here can talk about factory floors without needing it simplified. A British engineering, robotics or industrial software company entering that market should lead with the technical substance rather than sanding it down.

04

Politics carries national weight

Wisconsin decides national elections, so the paper’s political coverage is followed well beyond the state and its fact-checking operation is prominent. In an election year, political reporting absorbs an enormous share of the newsroom from spring onwards. Plan any substantial business announcement around that, and expect very little appetite for anything else in the final weeks before a vote.

05

Offer a project, not an announcement

This is a paper with a record of long investigative and explanatory work. If your subject genuinely has depth, offer access rather than a summary: the plant, the data, the researchers, the patients or the customers. A well-supported technical story pitched as a project has a better chance here than a polished press release does, which is unusual among regional titles.

06

Central time, and no beer jokes

Wisconsin keeps Central time, six hours behind Britain, which puts a London lunchtime at the opening of a Milwaukee working day. Write American spelling with dollars converted at a stated rate. Resist the brewing and sitcom references that British writers reach for; the city has heard all of them and the industrial economy has moved well past them.

Editorial Reality Check

The reporting areas that matter in Milwaukee

This remains one of the stronger regional newsrooms in the country, with a real investigative capacity behind it. The beats below are where a British business would plausibly be written about.

  • Business and manufacturing, covering the region’s industrial employers, automation and machinery firms, factory investment, corporate headquarters and Wisconsin employment data
  • Water and environment, covering Lake Michigan, drinking water quality, the water technology industry and the environmental enforcement decisions that follow
  • Politics and government, covering the Wisconsin legislature in Madison, the governor, Milwaukee city and county government, elections and statewide fact-checking
  • Health and medicine, covering hospital systems, medical imaging and device manufacturers, public health across the city and the research projects the paper covers in depth
  • Investigations, covering long-running accountability projects into state and local government, industry practice, policing and public safety, frequently published as extended multi-part series
  • Sport and culture, covering the Packers, Bucks and Brewers, the summer festival calendar on the lakefront, restaurants, music and the city’s arts institutions
Why Pitches Get Passed Over

What sinks a British approach in Wisconsin

The bar here is higher than at most regional dailies because the reporting standard is higher. Pitches fail when they assume a newsroom that will publish something because it was sent politely.

  • Chicago treated as close enough. Wisconsin readers are a separate market with a separate identity, and conflating the two marks you as somebody working from a map rather than knowledge.
  • Thin claims to a strong desk. Reporters who have carried out multi-week investigations will test a performance claim rather than repeat it. Send evidence, or send nothing.
  • Election season timing. In the months before a statewide or national vote, political coverage dominates and unrelated business material gets very little attention.
  • Generic sustainability language. In a city with genuine water and environmental expertise, unquantified green claims sound worse than saying nothing at all.
  • Brewing and Rust Belt clichés. Opening with beer, cheese or a line about industrial decline is a signal that you know the stereotype and not the place.

UK-Specific Questions

Wisconsin questions British clients raise

How influential is the Journal Sentinel beyond Milwaukee?

Considerably. It is the largest newsroom in Wisconsin, anchors Gannett’s network of state titles and prints several of them, and its political reporting is read nationally because Wisconsin decides close elections. Its investigative work is picked up by other outlets regularly. Coverage here travels further outside its circulation area than the raw subscriber figures would suggest.

Why do British companies operate in the Milwaukee area?

Industrial automation, controls and machinery, where the regional supply chain is deep. Water technology, treatment and metering, which the city has deliberately concentrated. Medical imaging and device manufacturing. Food processing and packaging equipment. Some come simply for central logistics, with lake, rail and interstate access and lower costs than Chicago an hour and a half away.

Is a technical story too complicated for a regional paper?

Not for this one. It won an explanatory Pulitzer for a long project on medical genetics, which is a strong indication that complexity is not the barrier. The barrier is evidence. Offer the underlying data, the people who can explain it and access to see the thing working, and treat it as a piece of work rather than a favour.

How should the election calendar shape our timing?

In a presidential or major statewide election year, expect political coverage to build from spring and to dominate entirely from around September. Aim substantial announcements at the first part of the year or the period after a vote has been settled. Off years are considerably easier, and midweek mornings in Milwaukee remain the best window whatever the calendar.

Which British evidence stands up here?

Technical and regulatory documentation rather than corporate description. Water sector regulators and industry bodies carry weight on water technology claims, Make UK and similar manufacturing associations give context on industrial output, Companies House establishes corporate substance, and patent records support engineering claims. Explain each briefly and convert every figure into American units and dollars.
