About Billboard & Why a DA 92 Feature Matters
Billboard is the definitive authority on the music industry, famous for its charts and its coverage of artists, labels and the business of music. For anyone in or around music, a presence in Billboard is a meaningful mark of relevance.
At Domain Authority 92, Billboard pairs music-industry authority with strong domain authority. Its editors want credible, newsworthy music stories. United Press develops the angle, writes the feature and pitches the right editors, securing genuine coverage and a high-authority backlink, with payment due only on publication.
Pitching Billboard from the UK: what a British founder or artist needs to know first
Billboard has covered the music business since 1894, long before it ever published a chart. Today it is owned by Penske Media Corporation and functions as the industry’s paper of record — the Hot 100 and Billboard 200 sit alongside daily reporting on touring, streaming, publishing, sync, catalogue deals and the executives who run the business. Its chart data comes from Luminate, not from label press releases, which is the single most important thing to understand before you pitch from London, Manchester or Glasgow: Billboard is a trade publication with a newsroom, and it is unapologetically American in its centre of gravity. A UK story lands when it has a US consequence.
Give it a US consequence
A UK act selling out Brixton is a UK story. That same act announcing a first North American run, signing US distribution, or entering the Billboard Global 200 is a Billboard story. Before you pitch, write one sentence explaining why an American reader in the music industry should care. If you cannot, the pitch is not ready.
Mind the chart week
Billboard’s tracking week runs Friday to Thursday, charts refresh mid-week and publish under a Saturday date. Monday and Tuesday are the worst days to land in a Billboard inbox because the desk is deep in chart processing. Wednesday and Thursday give a UK pitch far more room.
Send at the right hour, not your hour
Billboard’s newsroom runs on US Eastern time. A pitch sent at 9am from a London desk arrives at 4am in New York and is buried by the time anyone reads it. Sending between roughly 1pm and 3pm UK time puts you at the top of a morning inbox rather than the bottom of an overnight one.
Bring numbers, not adjectives
Streams, ticket counts, gross receipts, catalogue valuations, funding amounts, territory splits. Billboard’s reporters build stories on figures they can attribute. UK data from the Official Charts Company, LIVE, UK Music or PRS carries weight — vague claims about being ‘the fastest-growing’ do not.
Remember it covers the industry, not just artists
Some of the most achievable Billboard coverage for UK companies has nothing to do with music-making. Ticketing platforms, royalty and payments fintech, sync marketplaces, rights management, live-events technology and artist-services businesses are all covered as business stories, which is a far shorter queue than the artist features everyone chases.
Write in American English
Billboard publishes in US style. ‘Tour dates’, not ‘gigs’. ‘Fall’, not ‘autumn’. Figures in dollars with the sterling equivalent in brackets. Small thing, but a pitch written in UK press-release English signals to an editor that you have never read the publication you are pitching.
What Billboard actually publishes
Reading Billboard for a fortnight before pitching is the cheapest research you will ever do. These are the story shapes that recur, and the ones a UK pitch can realistically fit into:
- Chart milestones — first entries, records broken, and movement on the Global 200 and Global Excl. US charts where UK acts most often appear
- Deal news — label signings, distribution agreements, publishing and administration deals, catalogue acquisitions and the valuations behind them
- Live and touring — routing announcements, Boxscore grosses, festival business, venue openings and the economics of the touring sector
- Money and markets — funding rounds, M&A, earnings from the majors and the streaming platforms, and the analysts’ read on them
- People — executive appointments and departures, and the annual power and recognition lists that shape industry standing
- Data-led trend pieces — genre growth, territory-by-territory streaming shifts, and format changes, usually built on proprietary or licensed figures
The five reasons UK pitches to Billboard quietly die
None of these are about the quality of your business or your music. They are about the gap between how a UK press release is written and how a US trade desk reads.
- No American hook. The pitch describes UK success and stops there. Nothing tells the editor why it matters to a US industry audience.
- Chart claims with no source. Saying you are ‘charting’ without naming the chart, the week and the position invites a delete rather than a follow-up.
- The wrong desk. Billboard’s beats are genuinely separate. A live-sector story sent to a charts reporter is not forwarded; it is ignored.
- A press release instead of a pitch. Three paragraphs of positioning language before the news. Billboard’s editors read the first two lines and decide.
- Confusing editorial with sponsored content. Billboard, like every major title, runs both. Approaching the newsroom with commercial framing ends the conversation before it starts.

Billboard questions we get from UK clients
Will Billboard cover a UK artist who has never charted in the US?
Yes, but almost never as a straight artist profile. The realistic routes are a chart entry on the Global 200 or Global Excl. US, a US deal or tour announcement, or inclusion in a trend piece about UK talent breaking internationally. The coverage follows a news event, not a request.
How is the Billboard Global 200 different from the UK Official Chart?
The Official Charts Company measures UK consumption and is the domestic standard. Billboard’s Global 200 and Global Excl. US charts measure worldwide streaming and sales through Luminate. A UK act can sit high on one and be absent from the other, and Billboard’s editors care about their own charts.
Does Billboard accept contributed articles or bylines from founders?
Billboard’s editorial pages are staff and commissioned contributor work; it is not an open-byline publication in the way some business titles are. Realistic UK routes are being quoted as a source, providing data an existing story needs, or being the subject of a news story.
Is there a worst time of year to pitch Billboard?
The weeks around the Grammys, the year-end chart recaps in December, and the major festival and awards cycles absorb enormous desk capacity. A UK story with no connection to those moments is better held for a quieter week than fired into the middle of one.
Does UK PR experience actually help with a US trade title?
It helps if the agency has worked the transatlantic gap before. The mechanics that matter — timing to US Eastern, US-market framing, sourcing data an American editor will accept, and knowing which desk owns which beat — are learned, not guessed.
