In Touch launched in 2002 under Bauer as a fast, inexpensive celebrity weekly aimed at a young female readership, competing directly with the established supermarket titles. Bauer’s American celebrity magazines went to American Media in 2018, which became a360media, and a360media merged with McClatchy in December 2024. In May 2025 McClatchy announced it was closing the print editions of In Touch, Life & Style, Closer and First for Women, with final issues appearing at the end of June. The magazine you may remember from a checkout queue no longer exists in that form. What remains is a digital celebrity operation, judged on how quickly it publishes and how well its stories travel on social platforms.
There is no cover, no page plan and no weekly close to work towards. Every proposal is now assessed as a web story: does it have a headline people will click, an image that works in a feed, and a name American readers recognise. Framing a pitch around print placement immediately signals that the sender has not kept up.
Celebrity sites run on recognition. If the person at the centre of your story means nothing to an American reader, there is no story, regardless of how well known they are in Britain. That is the honest test to apply before you spend any time on a pitch, and it eliminates most UK founders straight away.
British reality formats and their casts have real currency with American audiences, and so does the royal family. A UK client with a genuine connection to a format that has crossed over, or to a person American readers already follow, has something workable. A connection invented after the fact does not survive an editor’s first look.
This is a same-day environment. When something breaks, the useful contribution is a quotable comment, a clear image and a fast response, delivered within hours rather than after an approval chain has met. If your client needs two days to sign off a sentence, they will consistently miss the moment entirely.
The desk runs on US Eastern time, and the celebrity cycle peaks around American award shows, network premieres, streaming release dates and the weekend gossip run. A pitch sent first thing in London lands overnight in New York. Aim for the UK afternoon, and time reactive comment to when the American day actually begins.
Celebrity sites depend on images and cannot publish what they have no right to use. Supply photography you own or have licensed, with the credit stated and the permission clear. Assuming that a shot obtained for a British launch can be reused on an American site is a common and expensive mistake.
The mix is recognisable from the print years but faster and more visual. These are the recurring categories, and they show how narrow the opening is for a business story.
The recurring theme is mismatch. A brand or founder story arrives at a desk whose entire output is organised around people American readers already care about.
Not sure which of these applies to your story? Send it to ceo@unitedpress.uk and we will tell you straight.
No. McClatchy announced in May 2025 that it was ending the print editions of In Touch, Life & Style, Closer and First for Women, with final issues published at the end of that June. The brand continues as a digital celebrity operation with a large social following. Any planning should therefore assume web publication, fast turnaround and social distribution rather than a print cycle.
Only where a recognisable person carries the story. Product coverage does happen, but it happens because a celebrity is genuinely associated with the item, not because a brand has news. If a UK company has a credible link to someone American readers follow, there is a route. If it does not, the effort belongs with a different type of outlet.
Within hours, not days. Celebrity news cycles are short and the site is competing with several others covering the same story. A client who wants to contribute comment needs pre-agreed positions, a nominated spokesperson and someone empowered to approve wording quickly. Without that, the window closes before the approval process finishes and the effort is wasted.
It sits within McClatchy Media Company, following the merger with a360media completed in December 2024. Before that it had passed from Bauer, which launched it in 2002, to American Media in 2018, which subsequently became a360media. The chain matters because it explains the recent consolidation and the decision to concentrate the group’s celebrity output online.
Sometimes, and it is worth checking rather than assuming. Certain British formats and personalities have crossed over and are covered regularly by American celebrity sites; many others have not travelled at all. Before building a campaign on it, look at whether the person in question is already appearing in US coverage. That is a far better test than domestic follower counts.
