Which Publications Count as Reliable Sources for Google, AI and Wikipedia?

A feature in a famous magazine does not always count the same way. Google, AI assistants and Wikipedia each have their own idea of a reliable source. Here is how each one judges coverage, and how to choose publications that really build trust.

Which publications count as reliable sources? The short answer

Reliable sources are publications with real editors, independence from the people they cover, clear labelling of commercial content and a record of accuracy. Google has no official list, AI tools mostly cite independent earned coverage, and Wikipedia accepts only established, fact-checked sources. The type of content matters as much as the publication: a staff news story counts far more than a sponsored post on the same site.

  • No single official list exists for Google or AI tools
  • Independence is the common test
  • Sponsored content is rarely treated as a reliable source
  • Wikipedia has the strictest rules of all
Which publications count as reliable sources for Google, AI search tools and Wikipedia
Google, AI search and Wikipedia each judge reliability differently.
The big idea

“Reliable source” means three different things

People ask whether a publication “counts” as if there were one official list. There is not. Google, AI assistants and Wikipedia each judge sources in their own way, for their own reasons.

Google

Helpful and trustworthy

Google has no public list of approved publications. Its systems look for content that shows experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust, and its quality raters research the reputation of sites and authors.

AI search

Findable and quotable

Tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity retrieve web pages and cite the ones that clearly answer the question. Independent coverage is cited far more than advertising.

Wikipedia

Independent and fact-checked

Wikipedia only accepts sources with a reputation for accuracy and editorial oversight, and it needs independent, in-depth coverage before a company can have its own article.

How to judge any publication

Seven signs a publication is a reliable source

  1. Real editors and editorial standards

Named editors, a published editorial or corrections policy, and a record of fixing mistakes.

  2. Independence from the subject

The writer has no commercial or personal link to the company or person they are writing about.

  3. Clear labelling

Sponsored content, advertorials and partner pages are marked as such, so readers can tell them apart from journalism.

  4. Named, accountable authors

Bylines with real people who have relevant experience, not anonymous or generic author names.

  5. Original reporting

The piece adds facts, data or analysis, rather than rewriting a press release.

  6. A long track record

Established titles with a history of accurate reporting carry more weight than sites that appeared last year.

  7. Relevance to the topic

A respected trade journal can be more authoritative on its subject than a general news site.

Compare source types

How Google, AI search and Wikipedia treat different kinds of coverage

The same publication can host very different kinds of content. A staff news story and a sponsored post on the same website are not equal.

Type of contentGoogleAI search toolsWikipedia
Staff-written news or analysisStrong signal of trustOften citedCan count, if independent and in-depth
Trade or specialist pressStrong for that topicOften cited for niche questionsCan count, if reliable and independent
Contributor or columnist pieceDepends on the site and authorSometimes citedTreated with caution; Forbes.com contributor pieces are generally considered unreliable
Interview or Q&A with youUseful contextSometimes citedNot independent when you are doing the talking
Press release or wire copyLow on its ownOccasionally citedNot independent, does not show notability
Sponsored or advertorial contentLow, must be labelledRarely citedNot independent
Your own website or blogImportant for facts about youOften used for basic factsAllowed only for limited, uncontroversial facts
Reddit, forums and reviewsMixedIncreasingly citedGenerally not usable

This table is a general guide based on each platform’s published approach. Every judgement depends on the specific article, author and website.

Wikipedia

Which publications count as reliable sources on Wikipedia?

Wikipedia’s sourcing rules are the strictest of the three. Editors keep a public list of frequently discussed sources, called the perennial sources list, which records whether the community considers each one generally reliable, unreliable or deprecated.

What usually works

  • Established national and international newspapers
  • Respected broadcasters and news agencies
  • Peer-reviewed journals and academic books
  • Reputable trade and specialist publications

What usually does not

  • Press releases and wire copies of them
  • Sponsored content and advertorials
  • Contributor networks, such as Forbes.com contributor pieces
  • Tabloids the community has deprecated, such as the Daily Mail

Notability is a separate test. For a company to have its own Wikipedia article, it needs significant coverage in several independent, reliable, secondary sources. Routine news such as funding announcements, appointments or interviews where you are the one speaking usually does not count. No single publication, however famous, guarantees a Wikipedia article.

Google

Does Google trust some publications more than others?

Google does not publish a ranking of trusted media, and no single mention guarantees better rankings. What Google does say is that its systems aim to reward helpful, reliable content, and that trust is the most important part of its E-E-A-T framework.

  • Coverage on respected sites helps people find and trust you
  • Your own pages still need to answer questions clearly
  • Links from sponsored content should be marked as sponsored
  • Buying or swapping links at scale breaks Google’s spam policies
  • Consistent facts about you across sites reduce confusion
  • Reviews and reputation research shape how raters judge trust
Before you chase coverage

Quick checklist: will this coverage actually help?

  • Is it written by the publication’s own journalist?
  • Is the writer independent of you?
  • Is it clearly labelled if it is commercial?
  • Does it say something meaningful about you, not a passing mention?
  • Is the publication respected in your industry?
  • Will your customers or investors actually read it?
  • Will it still be online in a year?
  • Do the facts match your website and profiles?

FAQ

Reliable sources: frequently asked questions

What makes a publication a reliable source?

A reliable source has real editors, independence from the people it covers, clear labelling of commercial content, named accountable authors and a record of accurate reporting. The type of article matters too: a staff news story is stronger than an interview, a press release or sponsored content.

Is Inc. a reliable source?

Staff-written reporting and analysis from established business titles such as Inc. is generally treated as more reliable than contributor columns, sponsored content or republished press releases on the same site. Check who wrote the specific article and how it was produced before relying on it.

Is Forbes a reliable source for Wikipedia?

Forbes staff reporting is often accepted, but Wikipedia editors generally consider Forbes.com contributor pieces unreliable because they are not fact-checked in the same way. Sponsored or partner content on Forbes is not independent and does not count.

Do press releases count as reliable sources?

Not on their own. Press releases are written by the company, so Google, AI tools and Wikipedia treat them as the company’s own claims. They are useful for announcing news, but independent coverage is what builds trust.

Does Google have a list of trusted news sites?

No. Google does not publish a list of approved publications. Its systems look for helpful, reliable content and signals of experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust, and its quality raters research the reputation of sites and authors.

Which sources does ChatGPT trust most?

There is no fixed list. A media intelligence study published in May 2026 found that most AI citations come from earned media such as news and independent websites, with very little from sponsored content, and that recent articles are cited far more than old ones.

Will one feature in a big publication get me a Wikipedia page?

No. Wikipedia needs significant coverage in several independent, reliable, secondary sources. Routine news, interviews and sponsored articles usually do not count, and no single publication guarantees an article.

How do I know if coverage will help my business?

Ask whether it is independent, written by the publication’s own journalist, clearly labelled if commercial, meaningful about you, read by your customers, and likely to stay online. Coverage that passes these tests helps with search, AI tools and real people.

Trust is earned one honest story at a time.

The right coverage in the right publications does more than look good on your website. It tells customers, journalists and search engines that your story stands up to scrutiny.
