Get Featured NowThe Evening Standard stopped being a daily freesheet on 19 September 2024 and relaunched as a weekly, The London Standard. Since 1 March 2026 its website has been run by The Independent, with around 38 editorial staff transferred across and roughly 25 retained for the weekly print edition. Print and digital are now effectively separate newsrooms, and you pitch them separately.
London. That is not a slogan, it is the filter — a story without a London hook does not run, however good it is otherwise. The weekly print edition is a considered, magazine-shaped read: culture, restaurants and openings, property, the City, the capital’s politics. It has room for longer pieces and plans further ahead than a daily ever could. The website, under Independent management since March 2026, moves at a different speed and to different priorities.
Londoners, and people whose business is London. Print circulation was around 150,000 in August 2025 — smaller than the freesheet era and a better-defined readership for it. These are people who live in the city and make decisions in it, not a national audience that happens to include some Londoners.
Start from the London angle and work backwards to your brand. A national trend becomes a Standard story when you can show what it looks like in Hackney or the City. An opening becomes a story when it changes something about a neighbourhood. A business story lands when it is about London jobs, London property or London money. The reverse — a brand story with a London postcode bolted on — is visible from the first line.
A daily wanted news today; a weekly wants something still worth reading on Thursday. That rewards planning and punishes urgency. If your story only works if it runs tomorrow, this is the wrong title. Ownership sits mainly with Evgeny Lebedev, with DMGT holding just under a quarter.
It suits brands, founders and venues whose customers are in London, and anyone whose story is genuinely about the city. It suits you less if your audience is national or overseas, or if you need speed — a weekly print title and an Independent-run website are two different propositions, and neither is a same-day channel. We will tell you which of the two fits your brand before you commit to anything.
